SUMMER FUN WEEKEND FUNDRAISER for AMERICAN LEGION & RED FLANNEL FESTIVAL TO BE HELD FIRST WEEKEND IN AUGUST

The Red Flannel Festival Board of Directors and the Cedar Springs American Legion post will be hosting a Summer Fun Weekend Friday, August 1 and Saturday, August 2, 2008 in downtown Cedar Springs.

“This is an excellent, unprecedented collaboration between area non-profit organizations,” said President Michele Andres. “The American Legion and the Red Flannel Festival partnership of this event, along with the Cedar Springs Lions Club debuting a steak fry, is an example of how working together can create benefits for everyone!”

There will be a large tent in the Legion parking lot, open from 5 pm until 12:30 am on Friday, August 1. On Saturday, August 2, the tent will reopen at 1 pm until 12:30 am. The groups are now finalizing at least 4 bands, providing a variety of live music and entertainment.

“Our goal is bring guests into our beautiful community,” said Andres. “We’d encourage all local businesses and individuals to plan events such as sidewalk sales, city wide garage sales, or any event to promote their business.”

Vanderhyde Ford is working on details for a Car Show at the north end of the City. More details will be advertised as they are finalized in the next few weeks.

“This is exactly what we’d hoped, that everyone would rally, get excited and get involved”, said Andres.

Volunteers are always needed…if you, or your non-profit group is interested, please call 696-2662 or email president@redflannelfestival.org

“CATCH THE RED FLANNEL FEVER!” FESTIVAL PRESENTS NEW EVENTS!! TEEN DANCE, STAR WARS CHARACTERS, CAR SHOW is BACK!

The Red Flannel Festival Board of Directors has been working diligently to provide fresh new events for the 69th “Catch the Red Flannel Fever!” Festival celebration. “The board has added 16 new events in the last few years,” said President Michele Andres. “This board is extremely dedicated to ensuring the Red Flannel Festival the biggest and best ever! We’re already working on plans for BIG NEW EVENTS for the 70th celebration in 2009!”

Last year’s new events, the $1,000 Karaoke Contest, Photography Contest,
and Raffle had outstanding participation and will be back again in 2008!

NEW this year, the Festival will debut a TEEN DANCE, on Saturday, September 27 in the NEW Chili Cookoff tent. The dance is 7-9 pm for
7th and 8th grade students; and then open to all 9th – 12th grade students from
9:30 – 11:30 pm. “The chili cook off date, time and format will be changed this year due to requirements by the Kent County Health Department,” said Rand Ruwersma, Red Flannel Vice President. Teams will be cooking chili on-site on Main and Beech Streets on Saturday, September 27.

Greg Johnson, a Cedar Springs resident, arranged for the 501st Garrison volunteer group to bring over 50 “STAR WARS” characters to Main Street for photographs and to mingle. “It will be so exciting to have Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and Storm troopers here in Cedar Springs to help spread the “Red Flannel Fever” and celebrate Red Flannel Day,” said Andres. “Of course, all of the other longstanding events are in place. The 5K Run Route has been changed and improved, and thanks to several generous volunteers, the Car Show is coming back!”

The Festival was granted 501c3 non-profit status this year and all donations are now tax deductible. The Festival is an independent, all volunteer organization with volunteer openings for individuals, families and groups to be involved. Many sponsorship opportunities are also available.

RED FLANNEL FESTIVAL – GRAND PARADE ROUTE CHANGED TO REFLECT FESTIVAL’S GROWTH

The Red Flannel Festival Board of Directors has been working diligently to ease some of the congestion of hosting such a large, growing festival. This year, the 69th “Catch the Red Flannel Fever!” Festival celebration, the route of the Grand Parade, to be held on Saturday, October 4, 2008, will be changed to the west side of the City.

“The board has struggled for the past few years with the logistics of such a large event at the school,” said President Michele Andres. “Over 120 entries of floats, cars, bands, etc. must be lined up every year! It’s just very congested in that area with the Giant Arts & Craft Fair and the marching band competition. This will definitely help relieve the congestion, and increase parking for over 3,000 guests at the Arts & Craft Show.”

The Grand Parade will line up on West Street and Pear Street. It will officially begin at the south side of Fifth Street (just west of the White Pine Trail) and Muskegon Streets, go to Main and Muskegon and turn left and proceed to Maple Street.

Festival First Vice President Rand Ruwersma is Superchair of the Parade, and Roger Gren is the Grand Parade Chair this year.
